Parametric Object: A Lamp

My plan with this project is to eventually fabricate a Lamp. I started by tiles that would panel onto the surface of a shape, allowing me to play with a variety of shapes, and possibly sizes for the lamp.

I want to make a lamp that would allow for me to attach different textiles such as various fabrics, yarn, threads, and woven fibres onto the surface of the lamp. In addition to the framed textiles, I intend to attach each larger panel using a strong thread or yarn to make the addition of the textiles not only aesthetic but also functional. I think that the light coming through each panel would look really cool and interesting.

That is why I chose to create panels, it would allow for a frame with holes to attach the textiles to.

With using both Rhino and Grasshopper, I can have fun with changing the different shapes and even different sizes of the lamp.

I will be making each of the panels by cutting wood using a laser cutter, I think the use of wood would allow for it to be lightweight.

What other materials would look interesting for the panels?

  1. Hmm this is definitely a unique take on a lamp design. I think tinted acrylic would be a really cool material to try! I've seen taupe colored ones which might be an interesting color/choice. What are you using to hold the pieces together after you make it?

    1. Acrylic is an interesting suggestion! Perhaps opaque acrylic for the structure and a coloured frosted acrylic for the panels. I think the panels could work nicely with frosted (not clear) acrylic because it would hide the lightbulb but still allow lots of coloured light to shine through.

    2. Acrylic is definitely a good suggestion, although I feel like I would possibly lean more towards a textured piece of sheet glass. I think you could have a lot of fun with what you could find at local shops.

  2. This is very creative. As soon as I saw the design I was thinking of aluminum. That is probably because of the drilled pieces. Then you could powder coat it.

  3. I really like the riveted effect! I think this would be a really interesting light fixture if a lightbulb was attached to the top and then hung from the ceiling. It would look great in a modern/industrial style home.

  4. I cant wait to see the finished piece with actual textiles on it, I personally really liked the designs with the curves. I would've loved to see some renders of it on an actual lamp so we can have a better understanding of how it would work in real life but overall I love your idea!

  5. Very cool. This would be a great concept to expand on and create different shapes and sizes of a similar lamp. What about flowers? I imagine this covered in flowers (maybe fake ones would be less of a fire hazard) and omitting light from inside! How gorgeous I love it.

  6. Looks like it would be a cool lamp. I'd be concerned about wood as a fire hazard depending on how far away it would be from the bulb. Would this just sit over a preexisting lamp as as a swappable shade? or would you also fashion a separate stand to go with the industrial look of the panels? nice work.

  7. This looks super cool! You might be able to use the holes to secure thin sheets of wood! I'd be super curious to see that in action

  8. This looks interesting, and I would try using metallic colors to confuse the fake with the real.

  9. Love your transformation for your design! Can;t wait to see your model in real life. I think it is a really great idea combining fabrication in your design!

  10. I would love to see it in acrylic or some transparent material. I am excited to see to combination with acrylic and fabric with the light shining through them differently!

  11. This lamp looks like the Eiffel Tower in the shape of Lego. Personally, I think the uneven circles on the wall created a very unique design. I think it would be cool to make it in the shape of an hourglass or as long as the Eiffel Tower.
